Though oils have taken center stage, moisturizers and balms are still a very necessary aspect of any well-rounded skincare ritual. Moisturizers enhance penetration of oils and serums while offering added protection from environmental aggressors, such as sun and pollution. A high quality moisturizer can be formulated with or without water. Water or aloe-based moisturizers tend to be lighter and are perfect for oily, combination, and normal skin types. Water-free moisturizers or balms offer deeper hydration and are wonderful for dry or mature skin types. Though balms may be unfamiliar territory for some, I highly recommend giving them a try – apply a small amount to start and layer as needed until skin feels moisturized and healthy.
Your daily ritual should involve cleansing, toning, applying a serum, and following with your favorite moisturizer. You may choose to use the same moisturizer in the morning and in the evening. If your skin feels dry when you wake up in the morning, experiment with using a heavier moisturizer at night. Alternatively, if you notice an increase in congestion, eliminate your evening moisturizer altogether or choose a formulation without beeswax, coconut oil, wheat germ oil, or cocoa butter.
