The Chocolate Shake Smoothie

I have been in a smoothie rut lately. So much so that I've been cheating on smoothies with cereal. Which brings up an interesting sidebar - remember our discussion on mindfulness? I tend to have a blindspot when it comes to supposedly "healthy" foods. Because here's the thing, cereal hurts my stomach. My initial reaction was that it must be the sudden rush of carbs that early in the morning. BUT I'm slowly realizing that the almond milk that I pour into that cereal every morning might not be the best thing for me. After ditching my almond milk lattes last winter for iced coffee, I suddenly noticed that I felt lighter and less bloated in the morning. But how can that be? Almond milk is healthy! So I pressed on and kept on buying and drinking that almond milk.

That's where mindfulness comes in. Simply because something is labeled a health food does not necessarily guarantee that it will agree with you. Listen to your body and do not be afraid to remove foods from your diet that you aren't feeling 100% about, no matter what nutritionists, magazines, or blogs say about them. 

I'm happy to report that my toxic relationship with almond milk is over AND I've fallen in love with a delicious, rich, chocolatey smoothie! 

The Chocolate Shake Smoothie
3/4 - 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk (in the box, not the can)
3 dates (pitted, of course!) 
1 cup baby spinach
2 tbsp raw cacao powder
2 tbsp nut butter (my current favorite is pecan nut butter)
1 frozen banana
As many ice cubes as desired

Blend and ENJOY!
