Skin Food: Frankincense Essential Oil

by Megan Schwarz | May 19, 2015 | 0 Comments

Frankincense was considered more precious than gold in ancient times. It was used in incense, insect repellant, perfumes, and salves for wounds and sores (it was even used to make kohl eyeliner). Frankincense is derived from the gummy sap of the Boswellia tree. Once hardened, the resin can be steamed to yield the essential oil. Frankincense essential oil is still highly prized in aromatherapy today. The spicy scent is thought to act as an antidepressant, to slow breathing, and to ease muscular and arthritic pain.

In addition, frankincense has numerous beauty benefits. It has a balancing effect on oily skin, a rejuvenating effect on mature skin, and even heals scars and fights inflammation. It's no wonder that this ancient remedy is still used in skincare today!

Here are a few of my frankincense-containing favorites:

de Mamiel Pregnancy Facial Oil – This silky soft face oil is perfect for sensitive, delicate skin. Nourishing argan, rosehip, and borage oils combine with balancing geranium, patchouli, and frankincense essential oils to create a gorgeously restorative, healing serum. Apply any time skin is feeling inflamed or troubled!

Indah Organics Zen Meditation Balm – Combining nutmeg, ginger, fennel, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and frankincense, this perfume balm is meant to create a sense of inner peace and harmony. The warm, spicy, rich scent will have you applying this balm every chance you get!

Jacqueline Evans Argan & Rosehip Face Serum – Velvety argan and rosehip oils are incredibly popular for a reason, they deeply nourish and feed the skin. And the marriage of neroli and frankincense essential oils in this blend yields a warm, yet subtly sweet scent. Perfect day and night!

May Lindstrom The Honey Mud – You may initially dismiss this sweet treat as suited for dry skin types, but the combination of antibacterial colloidal silver and raw honey, toning frankincense and witch hazel, and purifying white halloysite clay makes this cleanser perfect for those prone to blemishes. Combine The Honey Mud with The Problem Solver for the ultimate anti-acne mask!

R. L. Linden Time After Time Serum – The first thing that struck me about this oil is the gorgeous, GORGEOUS scent courtesy of warm, spicy frankincense. But what makes this face serum truly special is the herbal infused jojoba oil. The combination of calendula, comfrey, marshmallow, licorice, elderflower, linden flower, and rose petals produces an intensely healing serum for damaged, scarred skin.
