Lavender, Sweet Lavender
“Lavender essential oil is said to be the oil of honest communication and expression.”The uses for lavender essential oil are almost endless; in fact, lavender has been dubbed the "Swiss army knife" of essential oils. It is perhaps most recognized for its ability to calm and relax. Sprinkle a few drops on your pillowcase or add a few drops to your body oil to experience these benefits. Lesser known are lavender's anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. These characteristics make lavender appropriate for skin irritations of all types, from bug bites to acne. And it's the exact reason that I love lavender essential oil.
Here are a few of my favorite products that highlight lavender's balancing, healing, and bacteria-eliminating properties:
Spot Treatment – Lavender essential oil makes a dare I say "miraculous" spot treatment. It zaps redness, speeds healing, and even prevents acne from forming. However, it does not work on every spot overnight and it is a little drying (do not apply lavender essential oil to areas that are prone to dryness as it will only exacerbate any flakiness). Applying lavender essential oil "neat" is generally non-irritating for most skin types, including sensitive, but please perform a patch test first. Essential oils are highly concentrated so an adverse reaction is never out of the question. (If you do experience a reaction, you can always dilute it with your favorite carrier oil.) You may initially feel numbness or tingling in the areas you applied the essential oil, but that feeling fades (do not assume that tingling equals irritation because it most likely does not). I highly recommend experimenting with lavender essential oil as a spot treatment if you are prone to acne.
Province Apothecary Clear Skin – If you love the idea of lavender essential oil as a spot treatment, but crave a little more oomph, Clear Skin is where it’s at. This spectacular creation features 7 of the most powerful organic and wild-crafted therapeutic essential oils to help reduce inflammation, infection, redness, and scarring, including Lavender, German Chamomile, Rose Otto, Cypress, Frankincense, Helichrysum, and Carrot Seed oil. After applying your favorite serum or cream, place a drop of Clear Skin on any spots, hives, ingrown hairs, or other areas of irritation. Alternatively, you can mix a few drops of Clear Skin into your serums, masks, lotions, and potions!
Laurel Balance Serum – This serum is an absolute miracle worker for those with dry, irritated, and acne prone skin. It calms, hydrates, and balances leaving skin absolutely glowing. In addition to oils, Balance features a thoughtful blend of herbs including Lavender, Licorice, Comfrey, Calendula, Chamomile, and Yarrow to truly heal inflamed, irritated skin. This serum is perfect both day and night. (Want more? The Laurel Detox Mask is the perfect weekly companion to this serum and it contains lavender to boot!)
A.S. Apothecary Lip Balm #7 – This deeply nourishing lip balm was handcrafted with essential oils and butters chosen for their calming, soothing, and repairing properties. In addition to vanilla, honey, and shea butter, lavender was included as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic ingredient, to promote rapid healing. This lip balm is ideal for nighttime use, but works just as beautifully throughout the day. It's not heavy or greasy and provides just the right amount of shine! (In need of serious soothing? AS.AP Bite & Sting and Summer & Skin First Aid Kits feature magical lavender and offer immediate relief for any itching, burning skin situations that arise!)
Soul Sunday Unicorn Oil Aromatherapy Roller – What is unicorn oil you might ask? Well it’s a fantastically unique combination of peppermint and lavender essential oils meant to “make your head feel really good.” It may seem simple enough, but trust me it’s habit forming. (Looking for something a little more calming? Check out Even Keel. This lovely aromatherapy roller is loaded with lavender to inspire peace and balance.)
