24 Hours: Tara Miller of Health Hut

6:50 am Alarm goes off. We have a really old clock radio that wakes us up to the CBC, I love lying in bed listening to music and the news. It is a really pleasant start to the day!

7:45 am I am not a “jump right out of bed” type of person …I prefer a slower, calmer start to my morning and I cherish the time spent half asleep in bed contemplating the day ahead. This is often when my mind is most clear and when I get my best ideas. But without some type of restriction I may linger a little longer than I should, so I have a little rule that I need to be up no later than 8 am. Some days I come closer to this limit than others…

8:00 am This varies as I have never been able to set a real morning routine. Lately because the weather is so cold, I have been doing Tracy Anderson 15 minute workouts in my pajamas. Some days I will make a smoothie and check emails while I drink it. Other mornings my husband Tom will bring me tea in bed and I will start my day right there. (When I said “up” by 8, I really only meant awake.)

8:30 am I shower using Rahua Shampoo + Conditioner - I alternate between regular and voluminous, but this has been the only shampoo line I have used in over 3 years. Just love it. I use Dr. Bronners lavender soap or Meow Meow Tweet Poppyseed on my body and either Kahina cleanser or May Lindstrom Clean Dirt on my face. After my shower, my routine is pretty simple, and usually involves a face oil or serum that I am testing out for the shop. Right now I am using Indie Lee’s Squalane Oil and have really been enjoying it. Staples on my vanity include Province Apothecary facial serum, Tata Harper Rejuvenating serum, Kahina serum and for very dry winter days, May Lindstrom The Blue Cocoon balm to top it all off. On my body I am using Indie Lee Body Lotion, but before that it was CV Skinlabs Body Lotion.

8:45 am I put on Soapwalla or Leaves of Trees deodorant, throw on any outfit that is clean and presentable and apply very minimal make-up. It is always RMS voluminous mascara, Kjaer Weis cream blush and either IIia lip conditioner in Bang Bang or Wild Child or RMS lip shine in Sacred. I take a few drops of my custom Alexis Smart Flower Remedy and swipe Tata’s irritably treatment as my scent (this may help explain my perma-good mood...)

8:55 am I assemble my lunch which has been really quick and easy since I have turned my fridge into a mini salad bar. I pre-wash greens, wash and cut a variety of veggies, make a big batch of grains like brown rice or millet and have either hardboiled eggs, leftover protein from the night before, or BPA-free cans of chickpeas and lentils always available. I used to dread packing a lunch, but this makes it so, so simple and actually really delicious. I put some apple cider vinegar and olive oil in a little jar and fill up my S’well water bottle, a big squirt of Genestra Vitamin D and I’m out the door.

9:30 am I arrive at my workspace. My days vary between seeing clients for nutritional consultations (Monday-Wednesday) and operating as a retail shop (Thursday-Saturday). I am also filling HH online orders in between meetings, or sourcing cool new products, trying to debunk the latest food diet, dreaming about what I should make for dinner, calling Tom to talk about what we should make for dinner, keeping up with my book keeping, marketing, Instagram, and all that other fun stuff. Being an entrepreneur, I need to wear a lot of hats, and no one day is the same, but that’s what keeps it interesting.

7:00-7:30 pm I wrap things up and head home. I love working so much, but I don’t think there is a greater feeling than being done for the day. I especially appreciate this feeling, as up until recently I was working out of my apartment, and there never felt like closure to the day. I would start and stop, start and stop throughout the day, and often work late into the evening.

8:00 pm I make dinner with Tom, my favorite thing to do. No matter how tired I am from work, I am always up for cooking a homemade meal. Cooking is my downward dog - it’s a big time stress reliever, and allows me to leave just the rest of the day behind. Tom is a meat and potatoes type of guy, and I could live off veggies, so we try and meet somewhere in the middle. Roasted chicken with salad is a go to, stir frys, fish and brown rice…. I generally like to cook really healthy meals, but some nights anything goes. Like last night, we had spicy sausage pasta and it was amazing.

10:00 pm I like to take a little time after dinner, usually with a glass of wine, to plan my next day writing lists and visualizing what needs to get done and when. This helps me to not wake up in a scattered panic. I like to know what I’m in for… and I how many snooze hits the morning will allow…

11:00 pm I get in to bed: confession, I love watching Netflix in bed, but I know it is a bad habit. Once I finish a series, I try to hold out starting another, so that I can read instead. I like a good romance or just keeping up to date on the latest super oil, whether or not gluten is the devil, you know….
