Profile: Broccoli Seed Oil

Broccoli seed oil is one of the most impressive, under-the-radar ingredients in skin care formulations in my opinion. It benefits a range of skin types - dry, dull, oily, and mature - containing high levels of fatty acids and Vitamin A. The fatty acids are extremely moisturizing, yet at the same time this oil is easily absorbed and actually reduces the greasiness of products it has been added to (an amazing benefit for those oily-skin types that predictably shy away from face oils.) And for those seeking anti-aging benefits, look no further than Vitamin A - it boosts production of collagen, stimulates cell turnover, and increases skin's suppleness.

But what truly makes broccoli seed oil a superstar is its inherent likeness to silicone. Broccoli seed oil is high in erucic acid, an Omega 9 fatty acid that imparts a glow to skin and sheen and lustre to hair comparable to silicone. This also makes broccoli seed oil an amazing primer for skin. (You will immediately notice increased silkiness.) However, unlike silicone which clogs pores and builds up on the skin and hair over time, broccoli seed oil is highly penetrating, reparative, and healing.

Here are a few of my favorite broccoli seed oil containing products -

La Bella Figura Barbary Fig Renewal Serum - This product is La Bella Figura's claim to fame (well, arguably this or the amazing eye serum) and for good reason - it rejuvenates, repairs, and provides the perfect base for make-up. It is ideal for day and night and with rare ingredients like pineapple oil, blood orange oil, and magnolia blossom oil you can bet it smells divine. This was my first foray into luxury face oils and I still love it to this day. I highly recommend this oil.

Yüli ME Skin Fuel - Recommended for younger and acne-prone skin types, this oil nourishes, balances, and provides your skin with all the nutrients necessary for optimal functioning. In addition, it heals blemishes and reduces redness, thereby securing its place as one of my go-to oils when my skin has gone haywire. For those looking to make their first Yüli serum purchase, I highly recommend this unique, spirited blend.

  1. Ok the Barbary fig serum is totally going on my wish list (I would've bought it now if it was cheaper, plus really don't need another oil just yet). You make it sound so good!

  4. I had no idea about the wonders of broccoli seed oil, I don't think I've ever used anything with this as an ingredient. The LBF serum is on my wishlist and once I've used some things up I'm definitely going to look into that.
